Live finishes versus dead finishes
Live finishes, such as oils, are forever changing to enhance the patina of the wood. Dead finishes, such as varnishes and polyurethanes, seal off the wood. These finishes will show little change over time. Most wood items we buy are prefinished, mainly because the quality of the wood is not good.
That is not the case with the wood The Olde Mill uses. It is some of the highest quality lumber that has ever grown on planet earth.
New growth of this lumber is either unavailable or not near the quality of old growth lumber.

Coming to you unfinished from The Olde Mill gives you the opportunity to be very creative with our products. If you’re unsure where to start, we have a design team on hand willing to offer design advice and you are always welcome to pick up some wood samples from us to bring to your painter or local paint store professional to have them work up a finish for you. Whatever you choose, it is sure to be uniquely yours!
